5 Questions I Ask Every Woman Before a Branding Session
One of the biggest misconceptions about branding photography is that it starts when the camera comes out.
It doesn’t.
The best branding sessions usually start with a conversation long before the shoot day ever arrives.
Because good branding photos are about so much more than:
cute outfits,
brand colors,
or trying to get a few pretty photos for Instagram.
The best branding photos help support your business, tell your story, build trust with your audience, and help people feel connected to the person behind the brand.
After photographing so many women entrepreneurs over the years, I’ve noticed the sessions that feel the most meaningful and successful usually start with a few important questions.
These are the same questions I walk through with my clients before every branding session.
1. Why does NOW feel like the right time for branding photos?
This question always tells me so much.
Sometimes a woman is launching a new business.
Sometimes she’s stepping into a completely new chapter.
Sometimes she’s finally ready to stop hiding behind her logo and actually show up as the face of her business.
And sometimes? She’s simply reached the point where her business has outgrown the random iPhone photos and outdated headshots she’s been relying on.
There’s usually a deeper reason women finally say YES to being seen.
Talking through that helps shape the entire direction of the session.
2. What are these photos actually FOR?
This question changes everything.
Are the photos for:
a new website?
a launch?
speaking events?
social media?
a course?
a podcast?
a book?
marketing materials?
The more intentional we are about how the images will actually be used, the more strategic and useful your session becomes.
Because the best branding photos don’t just look good.
They support what you’re building.
3. What spaces actually feel like YOU?
Location matters so much more than people realize.
Sometimes the right location is a beautiful studio.
Sometimes it’s your office.
Sometimes it’s your storefront, your favorite coffee shop, or a space connected to your daily life and business.
Your location helps tell part of your story.
It also helps determine:
the overall feeling of the session
lighting
timing
wardrobe choices
and even what kinds of images we’re able to create
This is also where we talk through practical things like studio rentals, permits, or location fees if needed.
4. Do you have any deadlines coming up?
This question is SO important and honestly gets overlooked all the time.
If you have:
a website launch
designer deadline
event
marketing campaign
or speaking engagement coming up
we need to plan backward from those dates.
One of the easiest ways to reduce stress during a branding session process is making sure everyone is on the same page from the beginning about timelines and delivery expectations.
Your photographer should absolutely be communicating turnaround times clearly.
5. Do you have inspiration photos or ideas saved?
Okay… now we can officially talk vibes 😂
This is usually the fun part.
Pinterest boards, Instagram screenshots, Canva mood boards, outfit ideas, color palettes… all of it helps.
And honestly, inspiration photos are less about copying something exactly and more about helping your photographer understand what you naturally connect with visually.
Sometimes women describe something one way, but the visuals they save tell a slightly different story. Seeing inspiration helps bridge that gap and gives us a much clearer vision for the session as a whole.
The best branding sessions feel intentional.
Not rushed.
Not random.
Not like you showed up hoping something would magically come together.
You deserve branding photos that actually reflect:
the heart behind your business
your personality
your goals
and the season you’re currently stepping into
And more than anything, I want women to walk away from their session feeling comfortable, confident, and genuinely seen.
Because that feeling always shows up in the final images 🤍
